Officials still warn that jumping off a speeding boat is highly dangerous.

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama — Recent drownings in Alabama were not caused by a “boat jumping” challenge popular on TikTok, authorities say, despite recent reports saying the social media trend was responsible.Monday saying information released to the media blaming the TikTok challenge was incorrect.

The statement comes after multiple reports blaming the “boat jumping” trend for recent deaths, including a segment that aired Monday on “We’ve had four drownings in the last six to eight months and some of those were just drownings,’’ Dennis tells al.com. He said one of the deaths involved someone jumping off of a moving boat, but he couldn’t confirm that was the reason the person died. He also said it couldn’t be definitively linked to the TikTok challenge.

“When you’re moving at a high rate of speed and you hit the water wrong, it’s like hitting a brick wall,” he said. “Your neck is the weakest part and you run the risk of breaking it.”
