The series starts some two decades beforehit the nation’s screens, when, in 1938, a young Gordon became the first woman in the world to appear on colour television. Cut to 37 years later, and Gordon – better known as Nolly – is one of the most famous women in the UK thanks to her long-standing role as motel owner Meg Mortimer on the Birmingham-based soap., a national scandal at the time and one that remains a mystery to this day.

Bonham Carter’s involvement and masterful, stern performance gives Nolly a prestige never associated with, often the butt of the joke in soapland thanks to its nonsensical storylines, abandoned characters and wobbly walls. “No-one even knows what a motel is,” says ATV producer Jack Barton . “People think it’s a typo.”
The chemistry between Bonham Carter and Augustus Prew, who plays Nolly’s co-star and closest friend Tony Adams, is beautiful.
