This Woman Thought She Saw A Handmaid On The Ledge Of A Building, Called 911, And Thankfully It Was Something Else Entirely
Meet Casey McCormick, a 30-year-old who lives in New York. She recently went viral after a well-intended act didn't go down as she planned.Casey told BuzzFeed News:"There is a window near my desk that I often find myself staring out of throughout the day — it's such a luxury in NYC, and as I scanned the usual skyline, something bright red billowing in the wind caught my eye. It looked like a woman in arobe and bonnet, standing on the ledge of a building.
From her office view, Casey had spotted what she thought was a person who was preparing to jump off while dressed as a handmaid."Selfishly, my biggest concern was seeing her jump or fall. I really couldn't live with watching anything happen to someone. Unselfishly, my biggest concern was that someone was legitimately in trouble, or potentially protesting in a dangerous way," said Casey, a media creative who is also a comedian.
The 30-year-old went on to explain why she felt motivated to act:"There were a lot of anti-ban protests elsewhere in the city yesterday, and handmaid outfits have obviously popped up at many rallies in the past. Recently, a few blocks north of our office, someone sadly jumped from a different building, so that was also fresh in my mind. I felt compelled to do something, and there was very little else I could do from a few blocks away other than call 911.
Casey said:"I watched the first season of the Handmaid's Tale, but honestly with the political climate and all the current turmoil in the US with women's rights it became a bit too much for me, so I haven't caught up with seasons two and three. I'm admittedly pretty sensitive, so lighter TV fits better into my world."of oppression and women's rights.
She added:"I honestly feel like they were relieved too. They said when you're called for a potential jumper and it turns out to be an umbrella, it's a good thing."
