Tommy Wiseau and Greg Sestero, the iconic friendship duo from 'The Room,' reunited in this bizarre dark comedy.
The Room is an indisputable cult hit starring, written, directed, and produced by Tommy Wiseau, and renowned for being so bad, it's good. Currently celebrating its 20th anniversary, The Room garnered the attention of Hollywood A-listers to the extent that The Disaster Artist, based on the book written by Wiseau's co-star Greg Sestero about the making of the movie, was created with James Franco directing, producing, and playing Wiseau.
That Best Fiends has been divided into two volumes makes one feel that no project featuring the double-act of Wiseau and Sestero can escape some offbeat, slightly madcap element. This is again reflected in the title, which actually rather wittily places parentheses on either side of the "r," suggesting that friends can all too easily become fiends.
Wiseau's famously odd cadence and intonations are still at play in Best Fiends, whereby he often delivers his lines in a strangely sad and soft manner, and the film takes this one step further than The Room by having Wiseau sing some surreal little made-up songs. Many of Best Fiends' lines of dialogue are likely purposefully evocative of The Room, with "I give you everything!" being reminiscent of "I gave you seven years of my life.
