For those needing a super-charge on the road it's worth taking a few-minute detour off I-5 to discover the chocolate-covered coffee beans at Blackwells Corner.On a recent visit over Labor Day weekend, I was a little bit of both: Blackwells was a necessary stop for a quickly evaporating gas tank as well as a place to pursue the James Dean legend.
James Dean was killed when he crashed his Porsche not long after filming of"Rebel Without a Cause" was completed. He was 24.Just prior to leaving, mechanic Wutherich said he felt Dean hadn’t gotten enough time behind the wheel of his new car, so after enjoying a late-morning snack, the group set off up the Central Valley toward the Salinas with Dean at the wheel of his new prize.
Instead of trailering Dean’s two-seater, Wutherich said he’d like to ride to Paso with Dean to see how it was running. Dean agreed and the pair left Blackwells Corner at 5:15 p.m. A half-hour later at the junction of highways 46 and 41, a 1950 Ford Custom Coupe driven by a 23-year-old Cal Poly student named Donald Turnupseed turned in front of Dean’s Porsche.
