Three engines raced to the house and when they’d expertly put out the fire that was burning her deck, they told her it was started by embers from her grill. Vest had cooked out the night before. Then they gave her some other news: Two more minutes would have taken her house and her life. Chip had saved her. The firefighters cradled him. They thought she should rename him Smokey, but she let the name Chip stay. He was already used to it.
Once she married and had children, they brought home the “Please, mom can we keep him?” abandoned puppies and dogs that were mixes—a yellow Lab mix and a black cocker spaniel mix. Vick impressed upon her children one idea: getting a dog is a commitment, probably for the lifetime of the pet. A friend introduced her to black Russian terriers, big, powerful dogs. After taking lessons and getting trained in how to handle such a dog, Vest and her friend took her Russian terrier Zoe to Madison Square Garden to compete in the country’s best known dog show: the Westminster. When Zoe won Best of Breed in 2013, Vest and her friends celebrated by going to a nearby pub and ordering a Black Russian to celebrate.
