An internal LAPD report released Tuesday detailed for the first time a gun battle between an off-duty LAPD officer and an alleged burglar he found in his Sherman Oaks garage.
“This is what death feels like,” Beyda recalled thinking in an interview with investigators.
Camarena chased Beyda and kept firing, and Beyda fired back until Camarena collided into him, according to the report. The two men grappled with each other for control of the officer’s two guns.“I’m pushing his arms away and he’s on top of me,” Beyda told investigators. “I ultimately end up still struggling with him.
Beyda was shot twice in the chest and once in the leg, according to the report. Camarena was shot three times — in the shoulder, wrist and leg. Officers responding to the call found Camarena lying in a narrow walkway between a nearby building and a fence, where he was taken into custody. Prosecutors charged Camarena with attempted murder in the incident, for which he has pleaded not guilty. A preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for next month.
