Li-Cycle, a leader in lithium-ion battery recycling, is hitting the pause button on construction of the facility at Eastman Business Park in Greece.The company said costs from the project have run too high, and the plan is currently under review. The company promised of 270 jobs in the completed facility and more than 1,000 construction jobs during the project.
The Canadian firm received a $375 million loan commitment from the Department of Energy in February of this year. It would make Li-Cycle one of the nation's largest suppliers of materials for battery manufacturing."There’s an incredible amount of work happening in the construction field here," said Monroe County Executive Adam Bello. "These are large projects, large scale projects, with a lot of new employment, so that does drive up construction costs.
Bello said he is concerned but optimistic that the project will right its course once finances are figured out.
