Sofia Mehrotra’s Stockholm wedding reflected her Indian heritage – from marigold flower garlands to her embroidered veil – but also the traditions of Sweden.
When Sofia Mehrotra got engaged to Adam Freudenthal, her partner of almost 13 years, in July 2021 – as they were hiking a lush mountaintop in Saint-Martin-de-Belleville – they planned to marry within the year. “Then life happened,” Sofia smiles, appearing on Zoom from the same Alpine location where the proposal happened, and where she and her family have been skiing and trekking for years.
The couple stumbled across their Stockholm wedding venue – a boat yard on the water called Nya Djurgårdsvarvet – while strolling around the Swedish capital with their son. After a quick call to the owner to secure the space, they realised they’d be working with a completely blank canvas. “There were just four walls and two toilets. No kitchen. No lighting,” Sofia says. “In the end it was a great thing, because the space was like white paper, you could be super creative.
The couple were married outside on a boating dock in the Royal Djurgården district of Stockholm, the city where they met and live with their young son. “We were so lucky with the weather,” Sofia says.Sofia’s wedding outfit riffed on both Swedish minimalism and Indian maximalism . She wore a pared-back, pearlescent dress by Danish brand By Malene Birger that she happened upon while walking around Stockholm with Ruben during her maternity leave.
Sofia complemented her pared-back Malene Birger wedding dress with an embroidered Raw Mango dupatta, while Adam opted for a dark blue Lund & Lund suit and Hermès tie. After a bouquet toss from the dock, a sun-soaked champagne toast and a moment of solitary celebration for the couple, everyone headed inside for lunch. Guests nestled around tables lined with Indian fabric tablecloths, dotted with minimalist vases of carnations and marigolds, arranged by florist Olas Blommor.
