But a decade later, he’d write about his time in Lake Tahoe in his book “Roughing It” — including an account of how he accidentally ignited a raging wildfire.
The new landmarks are why I can tell you that after Twain’s climb up “a thousand miles,” he first set eyes on Lake Tahoe from a viewpoint on Tunnel Creek Road, a place that now sees mountain bikers zooming by at what would have been unfathomable speeds for Twain’s time. I can see how far he paddled a row boat from Hidden Beach, across Crystal Bay, to what is now called Speedboat Beach, where he camped nestled between granite boulders.
