An early morning blast destroyed a two-story building in Fourth Ward that housed a residence and a store.
For a time, neighbors seemed to think a family was buried in the rubble of the building, but that turned out to not be the case. The Butera family was, in fact, away in La Porte on a trip to Galveston Bay.
The building was located at Heiner and Hardcastle. Heiner, a north-south street, still exists and runs alongside I-45 downtown. Hardcastle, which intersected Heiner just north of what's now West Dallas, has disappeared from maps.
