'Windy City is the real thing.'
A 40-year-old home-away-from-home restaurant for Chicago transplants living in the Bay Area closed its doors for the last time Sunday — a day that likely packed the restaurant with Chicago Bears fans watching their team lose to the Atlanta Falcons.
Windy City Pizza and BBQ, at 35 Bovet Rd. in San Mateo, was known for deep-dish pizza, Texas-style barbecue and great Chicago sports fandom. The news of the closure was first reported byThough not from the Windy City himself, owner Bob Yeats decked the walls with Chicago memorabilia to make it feel like home for any Chicagoan that walked through the front doors.
Aside from the deep-dish pizza, Windy City also served other mouth-watering classic Chicago foods, such as Chicago-style hot dogs complete with the poppy seed bun and pickle stick and Italian beef sandwiches with au jus and giardiniera. On Yelp, the reviews were mostly positive. Many praised the attentive service, the “taste of home” feeling and the deep-dish pizza as a standout item.
“Don't expect the mushy thick crust you find at most restaurants that claim to have Chicago style deep dish pizza,” wrote one customer. “Windy City is the real thing. The crust conforms to the deep dish pan and gets nice and crispy.”
