Shoda ended up leaving school for a year, but things changed when she was introduced to Generation Hope, an organization dedicated to supporting young parents in school. She eventually opted to transfer schools and finish her degree — she’s set to graduate with a major in international relations and minor in africana studies. Next up is graduate school, and eventually, her PhD. And during the pandemic, having a support system like Generation Hope helped her finish school.
With Generation Hope on her side, she ended up transferring to a school with predominantly online courses, where she is thriving as an art major. Because discussions are such a big part of online classes, she’s learned a lot about her classmates, leading to her discovering that so many of her peers are also juggling schoolwork and kids. Callender is another Generation Hope grant winner, and her project is a virtual “paint and sip” night that brings young parents across campuses together.
