During Pride Month, The Dallas Morning News talked to Michelle Carpenter and Abraham Salum, who have been serving diners at their Dallas restaurants for years.

But her hard road led her to become one of the most recognized chefs in the region. This year, Restaurant Beatrice, one of her establishments, was a finalist for the James Beard Award for best new restaurant.

Her passion for sushi led her to seek training in San Diego. Years later, she was offered her first job as a sushi chef in Dallas. Calm and cautious, Carpenter guards her private life. But she’s generous at work. Before talking with, she showed an aspiring chef how to cut vegetables while avoiding injuries from the knife.
