Two were accused of murder at the time of their release. Another knew he was wrongfully released, begged jail officers to keep him locked up and, when that didn’t happen, called the judge overseeing his case. One still hasn’t been found.
CLEVELAND, Ohio— Eleven inmates since 2019 walked into the Cuyahoga County Jail and strolled out, despite court orders that should have kept them locked up.
The 11 mistaken releases from April 29, 2019, through Sunday is up from six that happened from 2015-2018. Whitfield, however, had two other pending cases in adult court— for an armed robbery and a police chase. He posted bond in the two adult court cases and was released from the jail. He never, however, posted bond in the bank robbery case. Harris first appeared in court on a traffic ticket. A judge gave Harris a personal bond but made clear in the court order that Harris be held in the jail on the burglary charge until he made an appearance in that case. Harris was released without appearing in court on the felony charge. Davis at the time was charged with domestic violence, accused of biting a woman who was seven-months pregnant while she called police during an argument. He never posted his $5,000 bond before he was released.McClarin at the time was also being held on a $5,000 bond he had never posted. He was charged with assault, accused of punching a woman several times in the head and face.
A judge set his bond at $30,000 for the new case. The judge presiding over the first two cases, John Russo, revoked Dent’s bond the same day because he twice violated the terms of his previous releases.
