When I stumble upon a lovely shade of coral or an unusually shaped shell that includes imperfections, I ignore it and keep looking for more ideal shells. Finding a seashell without any cracks is a tiny victory that I keep chasing.
A mollusk — like a sea snail, oyster or clam — relies on a muscle called the mantle to produce calcium carbonate, which is secreted and then hardens to create a protective shell. When the sea creature dies, its squishy body separates from the shell, which might eventually land on the shore, washed up with thousands of other exoskeletons.
We do the same with ourselves, of course, relentlessly seeking perfection inside, perfection outside, perfection in others — all the while knowing that we’re all a mess of imperfections.We get beat up here and there and often bounce back stronger. We are survivors — and not a one of us is perfect.
