PETA suggests that participants throw rubber fish instead of dead ones, stating, "Every fish thrown by a Flora-Bama Mullet Toss participant was an individual who suffered greatly and was violently slaughtered before being used in this disrespectful way." "I mean the fish are dead," the man told WEAR News. "I've never heard of anyone having a problem with throwing a fish. Just let it be. It's not hurting anything.""We buy our mullet from a local market, Safe Harbour Seafood in Bon Secour, and after we toss the fish we donate them," Parnell said.
