The Woodlands budgets $250K to 50th birthday celebration as plans get underway
The Woodlands Township Board of Directors meet, Thursday, Jan. 19, 2023. As The Woodlands nears 50, the township has started preliminary planning for a 50th birthday bash. The township will celebrate “50 Golden Years” Oct. 19, 2024, 50 years after George Mitchell first broke ground on one of the largest master-planned communities in the United States.As The Woodlands nears 50, the township has started preliminary planning for a 50th birthday bash.
Starting Aug. 30, 2022, the township will start a 50-day countdown, with a grand finale and gala held in October 2024. Mitchell first began buying land in Montgomery County in the 1960s and early 1970s. His original plan involved creating a"balance between man and nature" and a"complete community, with a major employment center where one can live, work play and learn," according to Robert Heineman's 2014 paper on George Mitchell's vision for The Woodlands.
