The J20 protest led the fight against the far-right in early 2017 — and deserves to be remembered

Successful or not, such cases work to disrupt movements.
Olivia, an organizer from Chicago, was one of the people arrested and charged. According to them, one of the key factors that kept them and the other defendants going was the groundswell of community support. Following the arrests,raised money, held benefit shows, maintained public pressure campaigns, and kept up with defendants on a person-to-person level as the legal battle dragged on.
“When I found myself in the middle of it, it was all so much worse than I thought; every bit of that system is stacked against the defendant, meant to find a guilty party, whether or not there is one,” they explained via email. “It was hard enough to get through with a whole community; I can't imagine going through it without legal, financial, and moral support from others — and yet that's how most people go through this system.
