The “Ghost” actress stepped back from the show because she is currently filming the upcoming Amazon series “Anansi Boys” in Scotland.
“I have been a fan of this book for a very long time and when Neil Gaiman told me it was being brought to the screen, I did everything I could to be part of it to help make people aware of Anansi and all his magic,” she said.
“Anansi Boys” is based on the 2005 fantasy book of the same name by British writer Gaiman. Malachi Kirby, L. Scott Caldwell, Delroy Lindo and Jason Watkins also star in the project. No release date has been set.The “Stardust” author, 61, also told Variety that he wanted Goldberg to play Bird Woman decades before he even crossed paths with her in 2018 at a New York Comic Con event.
“When I first conceived ‘Anansi Boys’ decades ago, I imagined Whoopi Goldberg as Bird Woman,” Gaiman revealed to the outlet. “She mentioned that she had just finished listening to Sir Lenny Henry’s reading of ‘Anansi Boys’ and that it was one of her favorite books,” he continued. “Sometimes things feel planned and inevitable, and we are incredibly lucky. She’s going to be scary.”
