💬 “It would be awful if this did all go ahead. I can see prices ramping up, and as a chef, I wouldn’t want that to happen, obviously. Orkney shellfish is special, so we don’t want to lose it,” Roberta Hall-McCarron, chef-owner of The Little Chartroom

has rattled the Orcadian fishing industry, which would be significantly impacted were the motion to pass.: “Everyone’s a bit surprised. People didn’t really know much and it came out of the blue. They’ve [the council] explored these ideas in the past, but it was maybe last mentioned in Brexit. We didn’t know the discussions had gone forward.”

Fennell says such a shift in governance would impact Orkney’s seafood market, just as Britain’s has been affected by Brexit. “It has the potential to change a lot. It might make things harder and more expensive. There would be changes to how fish are landed, to the legal framework, and all of these things cost money. We sell to restaurants and supermarkets and it might be that prices would rise.”

If Orkney left, the UK would lose ownership of the islands’ king scallops, queen scallops for starters. The fishery is known to be sustainable, a well-managed body of churning water perfectly positioned between the North Sea and the Atlantic, where strong currents allow sea creatures to grow well, uninterrupted. There is no dredging on Orkney.Fennell says it appears the counsel is only “exploring options”, supposing this might be a simple move to strengthen its negotiating position.

It has Roberta Hall-McCarron, chef-owner of the Edinburgh restaurant The Little Chartroom, concerned. “I think Orkney seafood is the best in the world. I’m super proud of what we have up there, and it’s used around the UK in all the best restaurants. I worked in Dubai and they’d ship Orkney langoustines over. It’s big money.

“It would be awful if this did all go ahead. I can see prices ramping up, and as a chef, I wouldn’t want that to happen, obviously. Orkney shellfish is special, so we don’t want to lose it. Restaurants are struggling enough as it is.”
