Ali Stroker broke a barrier even Hollywood won't cross

I regularly cover film and television from the viewpoint of disability and, nine times out of ten, how Hollywood flat out refuses to revise their outdated disabled narratives. But their failure is Broadway's gain.

This avoidance is also at the heart of why Stroker’s win is such a landmark. It’s not that she won for being an actress in a wheelchair. She won for playing a character that’s historically been perceived as able-bodied. In every performance ofup till now Stroker’s character of Ado Annie has been abled. The 1953 film version saw actress Gloria Grahame take on the mantle. Yet the musical took a chance and cast her regardless.
