is so bizarre you'd be forgiven for thinking it was completely made up for the sake of telly. But lo-and-behold, it's proven to be one of the strangest cases of fraud in recent British history.
On March 21, 2002, John made sure he was seen heading out to sea in a kayak, talking to a dog walker and those on the beach before he went into the water. He was later reported as missing after he failed to turn up to work, sparking a massive search of the water and coastline. John made this decision a few months after discovering that Panama had changed its visa laws, meaning they would have to pass a British police check in order to live there legally. Still living as John Jones, he knew that he would be rumbled, so in a bizarre twist decided to announce himself to the police, claiming he had no memory of where he'd been or who he really was.
John was eventually arrested in the home of one of his sons, while Anne was detained at Manchester airport after arriving back from Panama.Heartbroken, the pair's two sons cut all contact from their parents over the deception, releasing a statement saying they had felt just as scammed as the rest of the UK. Both also gave evidence in court sharing their anger at what had happened, and police reiterated that both sons were completely unaware of the fraud.
Anne officially cut ties with John shortly before her release from prison in 2011, after seeking counselling while inside.
