Selecting this all-important production must present an ever-increasing challenge – which makes it even more surprising that Chichester has taken this long to alight uponWriting about this work can sometimes seem to a critic as pointless a task as reviewing the Alps themselves: it’s essentially indestructible, predominantly beautiful and the many peaks are dazzling.
Captain Georg von Trapp sings the plangently simple melody of “Edelweiss” with a catch in his voice. One by one, the family leaves the stage and makes their escape down the snaking stairs underneath, to reemerge for an immensely moving and nerve-packed procession up the central aisle to finish. Gone is the piece’s omnipresent sweetness, to be replaced by a sense of palpable historical danger. Away from the yodelling, we are reminded, there are real lives at stake here.
