In 2017, SZA’s début album, “Ctrl,” opened a portal—one that represented a major leap not just for the artist but for R. & B. itself. A new deluxe edition comes with seven new songs that seem to revel in its influence.
” in which Issa, the show’s effervescent lead, is working through a complicated situation with her ex, Lawrence. The couple has broken up after five years because of Lawrence’s refusal to seriously pursue a new job. After attempting to avoid each other, the two reconnect and sleep together. But Issa hears through the grapevine that Lawrence is already seeing someone else; he has no intention of rekindling their relationship.
SZA’s minimalist soul sound and unvarnished, clever lyricism served as inspiration for “Insecure.” The showrunner, Issa Rae, asked the composer Raphael Saadiq to take cues from her music, and went so far as to call SZA her muse for the second season of the show. The collaboration makes sense: both artists illustrate the embattled courtships of young Black women in the Internet age, and approach the subject with an outlook that’s both sensuous and droll.
In 2017, SZA’s début album, “Ctrl,” opened a portal—one that represented a major leap not just for the artist but for R. & B. itself. Her alternative slow jams pushed her silvery voice to the fore, and laid bare all the quirks of her dating life, distinguishing her as a witty millennial anecdotalist. In the years since, her candid, conversational lyrics and lo-fi sound have paved the way for the many other “Insecure”-adjacent songwriters, including, Ari Lennox, and Ella Mai.
On “Ctrl,” SZA illuminates the parleys of modern romance against moody and occasionally psychedelic sounds that blend trap, pop, and indie rock. Even when the music is faint, dazed, or glitchy, she presses forward with clarity, seeking acknowledgment and pleasure amid the indignities of dating. It’s an album full of perfect, fragile lyrics, delivered bluntly through lilting vocals.
A deluxe edition celebrating the album’s fifth year anniversary comes with seven new songs that seem to revel in its influence. All but two tracks are produced by the primary “Ctrl” architects—the TDE affiliate Scum, the multi-instrumentalist Carter Lang, and the self-taught producer ThankGod4Cody—who take the same woozy, genre-agnostic stance here. A few of the new songs are experimental riffs on ideas from the original album, looser and weirder than their official counterparts.
