Following the death of Paul Cattermole and the departure of Hannah Spearritt, it will be difficult for S Club to maintain their bubblegum atmosphere
They say there ain’t no party like an S Club party – but that may mean something very different now from what it did 20 years ago.
There is a huge range of possibilities for the vibe of a band reunion. For some, it means genuine reignited success: look at the, whose original 1998 lineup reformed in 2019 under the band name, and who have become a bona fide 2020s cultural sensation, finding arguably more credibility now than they did at the time. For some, like the tween pop-punk outfit Busted, who have just finished a 20anniversary tour, it means genuinely fond memories, nostalgia and silliness.
For S Club, though, there is a sense of cynicism surrounding the reunion. No matter how much they smile their well-practised smiles, it’s difficult to avoid the feeling that this is a band that has simply run out of money, or relevance, or purpose.
