While Tesla should be accountable for the failings of its Autopilot system, drivers that use it knowing it has issues also need to take responsibility

Share to twitterFILE - In this March 23, 2018, file photo provided by KTVU, emergency personnel work at the scene where a Tesla electric SUV crashed into a barrier on U.S. Highway 101 in Mountain View, Calif. Federal investigators say the Tesla using the company’s semi-autonomous driving system accelerated just before crashing into a California freeway barrier, killing its driver. The National Transportation Safety Board issued a preliminary report on the crash on Thursday, June 7.

Since Tesla doesn’t advertise in the traditional since, Elon Musk and his Twitter account are effectively the company’s entire marketing strategy. Tesla has even been selling a full self driving capability for nearly three years that it has yet to deliver. Tesla also relies solely on steering wheel motion to detect if the driver is paying attention, an approach that is widely seen as inadequate for partially automated systems like AutoPilot.

I have the utmost sympathy for Walter Huang’s wife and two young children. It’s a terrible thing to lose a partner and father. However, driving a motor vehicle is an act that requires care and responsibility. Tesla vehicles are not self driving today and likely won’t be for some time and they certainly weren’t in March 2018.
