Waku Waku on Portland Street was inspired by the two-dimensional cafes popularised in South Korea
Waku Waku on Portland Street is a restaurant unlike any other. Upon entering the new Japanese eatery, diners will find themselves transported into a whole new two-dimensional world.
While owner Chris doesn’t have a background in art and design, he completed the drawings by himself over the course of four months, often staying in the restaurant until 3am to get the job done in time. Originally from Hong Kong, Chris used to work in a bank, but when he and his family moved over to Manchester two years ago he took a job at a food delivery platform and began hatching his plan.
As Chris explains: “As we’re a Japanese restaurant I wanted to put some Japanese elements into the design but also place the design in Manchester and the UK - so there are nods to both throughout. Food here provides a complete contrast to the black-and-white aesthetic, bringing a pop of colour to proceedings. From Donburi, a rice bowl dish, spanning signatures like the omurice consisting of an omelette made with fried rice and thin scrambled eggs, to deep-fried pork cutlet bowls and hefty portions of udon noodles and sides like teriyaki squid, Chris has created quite the menu.
