Alphabet Inc.’s search engine was slapped with a EUR1.49 billion fine by the European Commission on Tuesday, making for its third-such penalty in less than two years from the bloc’s antitrust regulator.
So, for example, Google prevented publishers from putting any search ads from competitors on search results pages, and required them to seek written permission before changing the way those ads were displayed. Google may not be out of the woods yet, as it could face “civil actions for damages that can be brought before” the courts of member states by any person or business who feels they were damaged by those earlier actions.
Where does the fine money go? Money goes toward the general EU budget, helping to finance the union and cut the burden for taxpayers by reducing the contributions of member states accordingly.
