While teacher salaries increased in all corners of the U.S. between 2002 and 2017, there is a massive disparity in salary growth rates between states.
Data journalist covering technological, societal and media topicsThe average teacher salary in the United States is approximately $60,000 today but there's tremendous variation in pay between states. That has resulted in a wave of teacher strikes across the country, most recently in Denver and Los Angeles.
Education has rarely proven pivotal on the presidential campaign trail but Sen. Kamala Harris recently proposed the government spend over $315 billion to raise teacher salaries over the coming decade. Given the number and scale of teacher strikes as well as the amount of public sympathy they have attracted, other presidential candidates might finally have to take more notice of education ahead of 2020.
The teacher pay disparity is also highly evident in the changes in salary over the 15-year period from 2002 to 2017. While all states experienced salary growth, that growth certainly wasn't equal. The average salary change in Alaska during that period was $27,688 while Oregon and Massachusetts also posted impressive increases of $27,511 and $25,939 respectively. By contrast, salary growth for teachers in Indiana only amounted to $6,904 between 2002 and 2017.
