'It's like the eighth grade mean kids, all four of them ganging up on one person.'
“I’ve been a resident for 34 years and I have never seen a situation like this,” resident Nancy Lacsamana told SFGATE.
The Brown Act violation occurred 18 months ago when Lentz provided his wife, who sits on the local school board, with information from a closed session city council meeting. Lentz told SFGATE he had previously acknowledged the breach to the council, and apologized for it again during the Dec. 15 meeting. Lentz said Davis, Mackin, Cunningham and O’Connell were aware of the violation when they named him mayor pro tempore for 2022.
In an email to SFGATE, Cunningham said that the council went through a “lengthy trust-building exercise” after the Brown Act violation, but said additional “concerns began surfacing within a few months and continue.” Davis wrote that she disliked “the way [Lentz] has approached” major city projects and “other City business the last couple years in public and private,” but offered no further details.
“They’re going to say he lost their trust by this one infraction 18 months ago, and then continue to barrage him on things they say they can’t talk about,” Lacsamana told SFGATE. “It’s ridiculous.” Several community members referred to Davis, Mackin, Cunningham and O’Connell as the “gang of four” in conversations with SFGATE. Michael Barnes, who previously served on the city council including a stint as mayor, told SFGATE he believes the situation is par for the course for those city council members.
