The cost of restaurant awards and reviews:
entities in having the awards based there had some small impact? What exactly does $2.8 million buy? In part, it buys the opportunity to spend more money. I've been invited to a couple of special meal events around the time of the awards co-sponsored by those same entities and hosted by previous and hopeful nominees and winners. Choose Chicago, and the Illinois Restaurant Association is helping with the tab.
Where does that money go? So many places and plates. Sometimes it is just a complimentary meal for an influential professional. Sometimes an ad or a course or more for a charity gala, or to support many often very worthwhile causes. Many times it goes toward promoting a special tasting, paying PR firms, hiring Instagramers, producing videos, sending chefs to various appearance or research trips. ...
Think about it. When wines compete for reviews or awards, they send bottles and bottles to the appropriate judges. The Academy members are invited gratis to"special screenings" for the nominating and awarding of Oscars. Theater critics have opening-night seats. Hard to do with restaurant meals.
