From a thriving high street to a heartwarming sense of community, locals are proud to be from Rammy
In the fore of the West Pennine Moors lies an "up and coming" market town that residents are proud to call home.
"Ramsbottom was quiet, it was a quiet little town. Whereas now, it's up and coming, vibrant town with loads of eateries, drinkeries. "We have Cratis Boutique, which is a new aesthetics company, we have Life Store which is fairly new in Ramsbottom as it has only been here for a few years. We had another lady here and there's businesses opening up all the time."
Eileen also recalls gardens nearby that were home to one of her grandad's creations when he worked for the council. According to the resident, he built a commemorative garden and bench for the Queen's Coronation in 1953, dubbed Conner's Castle. Although no one is quite sure where the name Ramsbottom derives from, the first recorded reference was in the 14th Century. It is believed the name is linked either to the valley bottom where rams graze or at the huts of the herders of rams.
Abbie tells us that business is "thriving" at the moment. She adds: "We seem to really be bucking the trend at Plentiful. People are so keen on organic and non-processed wholefoods, and amazing local produce - we're reaching more and more people every week." Being self-acclaimed as a well-known festival town, Ramsbottom is host to a Chocolate Festival, food festivals, music festival and Christmas Markets. Most famously of all though, it is also host to the World Black Pudding throwing championships in September.
