The general was reportedly a proud Ulster Scotsman
When thinking of cities in America that have always had a big Irish population, places like New York, Boston, Chicago and Philadelphia come to mind.
The city's own James Ferguson was the first Sheriff of the Great Salt Lake County. Born in 1828 to parents Francis 'Frank' Ferguson and Mary Patrick, he is said to have been proud of his Ulster Scot roots . The war was brought to an end with the signing of The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which saw Mexico concede 55 percent of its territory - including present-day Utah. Utah is now considered the Mormon capital of the world, with the LDS Church headquartered in Salt Lake City.
He was commissioned as Lieutenant General, and later Adjutant General, of this legion. He also served as commander in an expedition to Fort Bridger and Greenriver in 1853 and fought in the Utah War between Mormon settlers and armed forces of the US Government.
