Jessica Alvarado, 33, of San Juan, was sentenced to 46 months in federal prison after trying to sneak her illicit load through the Hidalgo Port of Entry.

A South Texas woman was sentenced to nearly four years in federal prison for attempting to smuggle dozens of AK-47 assault rifles and other weapons and ammunition into Mexico through the Hidalgo Port of Entry. Jessica Alvarado , 33, of San Juan , pleaded guilty to smuggling goods from the United States , authorities said Thursday. U.S. District Judge Micaela Alvarez in McAllen sentenced the defendant to 46 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release.

45-caliber handguns and 39 ammunition magazines, authorities said. Agent then searched her home in nearby San Juan, where they reported finding nearly 500 grams of cocaine and more than $13,000 in U.S. currency. She admitted to dealing cocaine, authorities said. Prosecutors said in court that the weapons found in Alvarado's truck are the kind often wielded by Mexican cartel members, but they did not present evidence that she had supplied weapons to the cartels.
