Townview teacher applauds Texas House Republicans who oppose the voucher effort. “It’s the right thing to do.”
I applaud Republican lawmakers who opposed voucher initiatives despite opposition within their party.
Students raise their hands as third grade teacher Anjelica Turner talks about character traits on Monday, Aug. 15, 2022, at Back Elementary in Rowlett, Texas. Back Elementary, a Garland ISD school, jumped from a low B before the pandemic to an A this year in the state’s academic accountability rating system.
, I referenced research on how vouchers negatively impact far more students than they help. We have access to even more proof from other states or Delta or Nacogdoches . Perhaps they recognized that ESAs will not realistically help the families in their communities find more options, but instead end up subsidizing wealthier families far away, many of whom might already have their students enrolled in private or parochial schools.
I commend these gutsy lawmakers for doing the right thing for their constituents, I encourage them to do so again as the special session continues. Opposing SB1 and HB1 despite opposition within the party is the essential decision to maintain the purpose of our public schools, preventing even more learning loss and the widening of the statewide achievement gap.
The right decision is not always the popular one. Just look at Pierre. During our conversation following my precalculus exam failure, I asked why he spoke up even when it led to more work for him and his classmates. Seemingly confused, he shrugged and told me, “It was the right thing to do.”Lance Barasch is a high school math teacher at the Townview School of Science and Engineering in Dallas ISD.
