Texas basketball signs Virginia transfer Kadin Shedrick to bolster frontcourt

Virginia center Kadin Shedrick is transferring to Texas, giving the Longhorns a pivotal addition after losing some big names from last season’s Elite Eight squad.AUSTIN — Late Sunday night, Texas picked up a key commitment from Virginia transfer Kadin Shedrick.

The 6-foot-11 senior center attracted numerous suitors once he entered the NCAA transfer portal, fielding offers from Duke, Xavier, Missouri and several other high-profile programs before deciding to sign with the Longhorns. Texas believes Shedrick will pair nicely in the frontcourt withand incoming five-star freshman Ron Holland, the top-ranked power forward in the nation.

Shedrick’s statistics don’t jump off the page. He averaged an efficient 6.2 points on 64.7 percent shooting, 3.8 rebounds and 1.4 blocks in 17.5 minutes per game for Virginia last season. But Texas coach Rodney Terry believe Shedrick has much more to offer, both as a rim protector and source of scoring. He’s showcased a deft touch around the rim and a smooth stroke — Kedrick hit just 1 of 7 3-pointers over the past three seasons but shot nearly 80 percent from the foul line last year, a useful indicator when assessing whether a player has the ability to expand his shooting range.

Texas still has work to do to fill out a roster that currently consists of Shedrick, Disu, Holand, graduate forward Brock Cunningham, sophomore wing Alex Anamewke and redshirt sophomore guard Gavin Perryman.
