An inmate died Saturday after being found unconscious in a cell at the Liberty County Jail, Ann Marie Mitchell, jail administrator, said Monday in a news release..
The man was found around 4:30 p.m. at the Liberty County facility and taken to a nearby emergency room. He did not survive, she said. Liberty County officials did not immediately identify the man or what charges he was jailed on. He previously reported an unspecified medical condition to the jail.Texas Rangers are investigating the death and an autopsy is pending. A custodial death report was not yet available on the attorney general's website.
The Liberty County facility was previously found non-compliant in August for over-crowding issues. The jail is no longer listed as lacking compliance with the Texas Commission on Jail Standard.
