Texas high schoolers’ STAAR results modestly improved over last year but have mostly not returned to pre-pandemic levels.
The Texas Education Agency released statewide results of end-of-course exams on Thursday, which showed students are making up some ground in math.
Math scores saw the largest drops when COVID-19 hit. In Algebra 1, the percentage of students passing the exam dipped from 84% in 2019 to 72% in 2021. This year, 74% of students passed the exam. In biology and U.S. history, the percentage of students passing their tests increased by one point from 2021 to 2022.Students didn’t see as much of a setback in English classes during the pandemic, and the results this year were mixed. In English 2, the percentage of students passing surpassed pre-pandemic levels and the overall pass rate increased by one point from 2021 to this year.Initial glimpses of STAAR results showed promise for North Texas districts.
The gains among Black students and students learning English were greater overall, which district leaders say indicates they are moving closer to their goal of closing academic gaps between demographic groups. DISD officials pointed to the infusion of extra resources and increased collaboration as potential drivers of the score increases. But it’s too early to know what specific strategies — be it expanded tutoring, an extended school year or other work — are making the biggest difference, they cautioned.showed promise of improvement in most subject areas, district officials said.
