Legendary Kansas State coach Bill Snyder recruited the Torrance, California, high school star.
Smiley N. Pool, MBR / TNSGrowing up, Sarkisian could taste the salted Pacific breeze from his home in Torrance, Calif. And he stayed local after sprouting into a two-sport star in high school, enrolling at two-year El Camino College after spending a semester at Southern Cal pursuing a baseball career.
Sarkisian capped his senior All-America campaign by throwing for 291 yards with two touchdowns as the Cougars grinded out a 19-15 win over Snyder’s Wildcats in the 1997 Cotton Bowl. In the aftermath, Sarkisian received an unexpected correspondence. USC was led by that season’s eventual Heisman Trophy winner, quarterback Carson Palmer. Kansas State was powered by do-it-all halfback Darren Sproles, the 5-foot-6 dynamo and future member of the NFL’s 2010’s All-Decade team.
Now in his second year as Texas’ head coach, Sarkisian will return to Kansas State’s campus this week for the first time since 2002. And this version of the Wildcats is arguably as dangerous as the one that topped a powerhouse USC program two decades ago.
