The organization is working with an Israeli nonprofit group to serve meals to those affected by the Hamas attack and its aftermath.
Volunteers for Dallas-based disaster relief organization Texas Baptist Men serve food in Israel following the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas. The Texas Baptist Men, a disaster relief organization based in Dallas, have been in Israel this week handing out meals to communities affected by Saturday’s Hamas attack and the ensuing war.
“We actually send groups over there once a month to train specifically in how to cook kosher meals and various things like that,” Smith said. “So all of these people have already been to Israel already, have cooked in all of our kitchens, know how to do all that kind of stuff. And so … as soon as something happened, we were gearing people up to send them over.”, Smith said volunteers would find another way in.
The organization is prepared to be there a while. The current group of volunteers is slated to stay two weeks, and more volunteer groups are preparing to replace them and expand Texas Baptist Men’s efforts. Even with the extensive preparation, the operation is challenging. Smith said the group got the call for help while their Israeli partners were in a bomb shelter, and they still face major hurdles in securing more food once what they had already stockpiled starts running low. It’s made worth it, though, by the response from the people they’re helping.“A lot of lot of hugs and tears, and people just love to see someone there to help, and that’s that’s part of our mission,” Smith said.
