Texas A&M Faculty Senate fights back against Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick attacks on tenure, critical race theory

Leaders of Texas A&M University’s Faculty Senate this week voiced their support of academic freedom in response to Lt. Gov Dan Patrick’s recent attacks on the tenure process and critical race theory.

The Republican-led Legislature last year approved a measure that would ban the subject from being taught in K-12 schools, although critics have noted that any efforts to limit the discussion of racism in the classroom could have broader negative impacts. Tenure is an employment status in colleges and universities that denotes an indefinite appointment, preventing faculty from being terminated unless for cause or under extraordinary circumstances -- such as financial constraints and program discontinuation.
