Texans rookie left guard Kenyon Green did not practice Thursday with an illness that had him practicing with limitations on Wednesday. The No. 15 overall pick has seen his snap counts decrease amidst a series of struggles, and it’s more likely that backup Justin McCray’s role expands Sunday against the Browns if Green doesn’t participate in Friday’s walk-through.

The Texans have allowed five sacks in each of their last two games, and the offensive line has failed to establish a rushing attack while logging a franchise-low 21 yards against the Commanders and 36 yards in Sunday’s loss to the Dolphins. Rookie running back Dameon Pierce was limited to 8 yards rushing in each game.

Green’s potential absence threatens progression for the first-round pick against a Browns defense that surrenders the 10th-most rushing yards in the NFL and pressures quarterbacks at the 12th-lowest rate . McCray started in the season opener at left guard and filled in for injured right guard A.J. Cann during the team’s Week 8 loss to the Titans.

Green, who missed most of training camp with a concussion, has allowed the sixth-most pressures among guards in the last four games along with three sacks , according to Pro Football Focus. Cann has surrendered the third-most along with three sacks in that span. But the Texans coaching staff spelled Green against the Dolphins with a predetermined plan that rotated in McCray at left guard and resulted in his most offensive snaps in four games .

“Will it continue? It’s like that for all positions for us,” Texans coach Lovie Smith said Monday. “I think Kenyon did some things better yesterday, but just our overall play at the offensive line position still isn’t what it needs to be. Looking at the front that we have coming in here, seems like I’ve been talking about a great front each week. Any front with Myles Garrett on it is pretty special.
