Texans film room: As season winds down, should Davis Mills return to full-time QB?

Mills, who competed 12-of-24 passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns, who rushed for another 17-yard score, fielded perhaps his best game of the 2022 season against the Chiefs. It contained enough success to call into questionhe’s fielded the past two games or place the game plan back fully into Mills’ hands for what would become a final three-game evaluation.
But Kansas City countered on Houston’s second offensive possession. Just before the first snap of the drive, Chiefs safety Justin Reid sprinted near the line to cover up Quitoriano. The rookie tight end was forced inside on his route, but there was still enough space generated on the left side for Mills to fire a slant to Chris Moore that didn’t hit the receiver quite in stride. Moore couldn’t reach back and handle the pass, which led to a second-and-10 situation.
On first-and-goal at the Chiefs’ 10 in the second half, Mills handed the ball off to Royce Freeman for no gain. Driskel was split wide right, but the Texans were unable to generate any space along the weak side on the left.The multi-quarterback package’s failure to generate ground yards forced Mills to bail the offense out in a third-and-7 situation on the first drive. Such long downs aren’t favorable for any team, much less the 1-12-1 Texans.
Mills has also seemed to move on from his tendency to seek out safe checkdown options that hardly convert third-down situations. On Houston’s fourth drive, Mills stepped up in the pocket while under pressure on third-and-6, ignored Burkhead’s backfield route and instead found Moore on a mid-range cross that resulted in a 7-yard gain. Mills and Dorsett later missed each other by just a step on a third-and-6 sideline toss that would’ve gained at least 24 yards had it been completed.
