His injury complicates a wide receiver room that is already lacking depth.

Texans wide receiver Brandin Cooks has been ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Browns with a calf injury, the team announced Friday. Cooks practiced with limitations on Thursday with the injury and did not participate in the team’s walk through on Friday. It’s a considerable absence for a Texans offense that is poised to start Kyle Allen for the second straight week. Allen struggled early in Houston’s 30-15 loss in Miami last week, a game in which the Texans scored late after going down 30-0 at halftime. Allen was 26-of-39 passing for 215 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions against the Dolphins, and he’ll have to improve upon his performance without the team’s leading receiver.
Cooks has 44 catches for 520 yards and a touchdown this season, and coach Lovie Smith sidelined him for one game after Cooks missed practices following a Nov. 1 trade deadline in which the Texans weren’t able to secure a deal to send the disgruntled wide receiver to another team. Cooks’ injury complicates a wide receiver room that is already lacking depth. Nico Collins is Houston’s second-leading receiver with 34 catches for 446 yards and a touchdown, but Chris Moore and Phillip Dorsett are the only other receivers on the active roster who have logged more than one target this season.
