This week's trip down Vicarage Road memory lane recalls the first foreign player to sign for Watford from an overseas club WatfordFC
Signing players from overseas clubs has become very much the norm for Watford in the Pozzo era but for much of the club’s history it was unheard of.
But that changed in September 1981 when tough-tackling Dutch midfielder Jan Lohman made history by becoming the first foreign player to join the Hornets from an overseas side. Lohman was to remain at Vicarage Road until the end of the 1985/86 season, playing his part in the golden era by making 81 appearances in all competitions and scoring ten goals.
Having netted on his league debut in a 2-2 draw with Charlton Athletic, he repeated the trick in his first Watford cup match to secure a 1-0 victory for the then Division Two club over Manchester United.Take a look at these ten pictures from our archive that you may not have seen for many years of this Hornets’ history maker’s time at Vicarage Road.Lohman lets fly on QPR's plastic pitch.Lohman takes on an opponent as the crowd watch intently.
