Temu's low prices catapulted the Chinese app to the top of the US download charts. Here's what we know about it — and how it could avoid its competitors' pitfalls.
Temu could have benefited from Pinduoduo's deep pockets when it comes to marketing the new app to US consumers, Kirkpatrick said. The company can also make use of first-party data it has obtained from its existing Pinduoduo customers while appealing to potential new Temu users in North America.
"They still have that hurdle of understanding Western consumer behavior that might differ," Kirkpatrick said, adding that the company could look at Pinduoduo's previous experiences with Australian shoppers."Australia and US consumers are often similar in their shopping preferences." Bernstein analysts published a note on January 9 pointing out that rankings of top-downloaded apps have been volatile.
"Starting with TikTok we've seen a wave of new entrants shoot to the top of the download charts over the past year including BeReal and now Temu," the analysts wrote."Perhaps consumers are just ready for something new, but can any new entrant stick around?" Temu still faces stiff competition from Shein and Amazon. Shein was the most downloaded app globally in 2022, with 229 million downloads, while Amazon was the top app in the US.
