The incident is part of a three-day crime spree that included two shootings an hour apart that prosecutors say the driver helped carry out.
Police in Cuyahoga County and across the country are dealing with waves of stolen Kias and Hyundais after tutorials showing how easy certain makes and models are to steal went viral.
On Jan. 23, three days after the Burger King incident, a man told police a Hyundai Sonata struck his rearview mirror and didn’t stop, so he followed it. As the victim pulled up near West 46th Street and Storer Avenue, the Hyundai stopped. The driver and passenger got out with guns and started shooting at him, prosecutors said.
Police found nine bullet casings from a 9mm handgun in the street and bullet holes in the front window of a home and a car parked on the street nearby, records say. About an hour later, a man was shot near West 52nd Street and Clark Avenue. A city of Cleveland camera mounted near the intersection captured someone sticking a gun out of the driver’s seat of a Hyundai Sonata and firing shots into the man’s car as it headed the opposite direction, records say. The camera also captured the car’s license plate, which revealed the car was reported stolen on Jan. 18, according to records.
