Incumbent is building a stockpile after a slow start, though unlike the Dallas Democrat he won’t need much to get through the March primary.
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, left, at a Senate Commerce Committee hearing Feb. 9, 2023. At right, Rep. Colin Allred, D-Dallas, at a news conference at the Capitol on June 24, 2020.WASHINGTON — Sen. Ted Cruz still lags Rep. Colin Allred in campaign cash but he’s closing the gap, outraising the Dallas Democrat in the last three months and growing his stockpile ahead of the 2024 contest. That put Allred’s total at $10.9 million — well ahead of the $8.
Allred’s best-known rival for the Democratic nomination, state Sen. Roland Gutierrez of San Antonio, entered the race after the deadline to file an FEC report for the second quarter, and hasn’t given any indication of where his fundraising stands. So did state Rep. Carl Sherman of DeSoto. Campaigns often announce totals ahead of filing deadlines to put the best spin they can on the numbers and, in some cases, to obscure maneuvers that inflate the topline — such as loans from the candidate, or funds shifted from a political action committee he controls.Allred’s campaign was using $13.5 million as its total Wednesday, including funds he’d raised over the course of three U.S. House campaigns and shifted to the Senate account.
Allred aides said he received donations from nearly 150,000 people and from all but 18 of Texas’ 254 counties. The average donation this quarter was $29.83, and 95% of donations were under $100..
