Union representative said ratified contracts improve workers' hours, overtime pay and pension; bus routes expected to return to normal operations Monday morning
Striking bus drivers voted Sunday to end their month-long labor dispute with the French staffing company that contracts with the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System, a move expected to restore regular bus service in the South Bay beginning Monday morning.
Representatives from the labor union said the new contracts will also offer access to better facilities, including bathrooms, during breaks; better pay when drivers are called in on scheduled off days; and a pension increase.“The strike is over and workers will be going back tomorrow,” Matt McQuaid, a Teamsters spokesperson, said Sunday afternoon. “This just goes to show the power of solidarity and sticking together. They didn’t back down, they stood strong.
Whitburn also thanked Local 683 “for successfully negotiating the new contract with Transdev and reaching an agreement. We know work still needs to be done to address some of the issues for better working conditions. I look forward to working with both the Teamsters and Transdev moving forward.”Fausto Surposa, who’s been a bus driver for 24 years, is on the Local 683 executive board and was on the committee that negotiated the new contracts.
Surposa said this issue was so important because drivers would work four hours in the mornings, when ridership is high, then take the five-hour unpaid break until the afternoon and evening commute.
